Our climate strategy

On the road to greenhouse gas neutrality

In a world where climate change is progressing inexorably, we are increasingly confronted with its effects: from droughts and blazing forest fires to heavy rainfall and devastating floods. These events are just a foretaste of what we can expect in the near future.

The Ruhrverband has set itself the goal of achieving a balanced greenhouse gas balance by 2030. One of the cornerstones of our climate protection strategy is the creation of a greenhouse gas balance sheet. We began recording our emissions back in 2006. Developments in specialist circles and research, in which we are also active ourselves (KAbit project), are helping us to further optimise our balance sheet. From 2021, our carbon footprint will be calculated on the basis of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol according to the operational approach with Scope 1 to 3 for the gases CO2, CH4 and N2O.

We are also committed to climate protection through the preservation and expansion of forest areas and the provision of electricity from renewable sources. Ruhrverband also optimises the electricity consumption of its more than 800 water management plants.

More about our climate strategy

Climate protection

We contribute to climate protection by providing electricity from renewable energies and reforesting forests.

Climate resilience

In order to meet the challenges of climate change, it is necessary to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Emission reduction
