Navigation on the Ruhr and on reservoirs and dams

Whether it's a family outing, a group tour, a trip for two or alone - boat trips on the Ruhr are a unique experience for young and old.

The Ruhr is navigable for motorised vehicles from its mouth on the Rhine to Ruhr kilometre 41.6 (Zornige Ameise, Essen-Rellinghausen). Up to the Ruhr kilometre 12.208 (Schlossbrücke, Mülheim), the Ruhr has been developed into a federal waterway on which commercial shipping also takes place (Rhein-Ruhr-Hafen Mülheim). From there, the Ruhr becomes a state waterway up to the navigability limit, on which the navigation season lasts from 15 April to 15 October. Outside of these times, the fairway buoys are retracted due to possible flooding, and navigation is then at your own risk. Ships with a draught of up to 1.70 metres, a length of 38 metres and a width of 5.20 metres are permitted on the state waterway.
