Hiking along the Ruhr
Hiking is one of the most popular leisure activities along the Ruhr, its reservoirs and dams. Whether on challenging routes through the Sauerland or on the trail of the unique industrial history of the Ruhr metropolis - the Ruhr Valley invites you to discover new things!
Ruhrhöhenweg
The Ruhrhöhenweg, which runs for a total length of 244 kilometres from the source of the Ruhr in Winterberg to where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine near Duisburg, is one of the most popular hiking trails in North Rhine-Westphalia. The special feature of the hiking route: although it roughly follows the course of the Ruhr, it does not run along the banks of the river like the Ruhr Valley cycle path, but over the surrounding hills. The Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV) maintains the long-distance hiking trail, which was created in 1958 and is marked throughout with a white St Andrew's cross. Numerous castle ruins and palaces as well as industrial monuments can be visited along the way.
