Assumption of the water maintenance obligation

Water management from a single source

The integrated management of the sewer network, wastewater treatment and watercourse maintenance offers many opportunities to optimise the overall system ecologically and economically.

In the Ruhr catchment area, the local authorities are responsible for the maintenance and ecological reorganisation of the watercourses. The Ruhrverband supports its member municipalities in maintaining the watercourses and improving their condition by assuming responsibility for watercourse maintenance.

This makes it possible to

  • joint water management plans are drawn up,
  • measures to improve the condition of water bodies are planned and implemented and
  • urban development aspects, flood protection and nature conservation are taken into account.

Through this cooperation, we promote the sustainable and holistic development of the waters in the Ruhre catchment area as operational river basin management. The basic idea is to achieve the goal of good ecological status and to implement the measures necessary for this, taking into account urban planning and development as well as flood protection. The coordination of these aspects in a holistic approach is a subject area that the Ruhrverband has been dealing with for decades. This experience and the wealth of expertise of its employees should therefore be incorporated into watercourse maintenance for the benefit of local authorities.
