River basin management

River basin management stands for water management that is orientated towards the natural catchment area boundaries of a river basin.

Watercourse development and flood protection

Aspects of biodiversity, nature conservation and species protection play just as important a role in watercourse management as hydraulic capacity.

Watercourse maintenance

The integrated management of wastewater treatment and water maintenance offers many opportunities to optimise the overall system.

Dams

Our eight dams secure the water supply for around 4.6 million people in the Ruhr catchment area.

The Ruhrverband is responsible for comprehensive water management in the entire Ruhr river basin with a system of dams to manage water volumes and a comprehensive network of wastewater treatment plants and Ruhr reservoirs to keep the waters clean for 60 municipalities.

In addition to eight reservoirs, the Ruhrverband is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 44 water gauges and 31 precipitation measuring stations as well as for the hydraulic engineering management of 15 hydroelectric power plants operated by its subsidiary Lister- und Lennekraftwerke GmbH.
