A full house at the open day at the Biggetal sewage treatment plant

More than 500 visitors came to find out about modern wastewater treatment and water protection

The open day at the Biggetal wastewater treatment plant was a resounding success. On 31 May 2026, more than 500 visitors took the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of wastewater treatment and find out about the wide range of tasks carried out by the Ruhrverband. With sunny weather and an almost cloudless sky, conditions were ideal for a thoroughly successful event.

The focus was on guided tours of the treatment plant’s premises. During these tours, guests gained a clear insight into the technical and biological processes of wastewater treatment, as well as the importance of an efficient infrastructure for sustainable water protection. Guest interest was high: at times, up to 50 people joined the guided tours.

Many visitors were impressed by the complexity of wastewater treatment. In particular, the treatment plant’s large catchment area and the technical effort required for reliable wastewater treatment attracted great interest. Direct interaction with staff highlighted the importance of the daily work at the treatment plant and brought to life an area that often remains hidden in everyday life.

Families also had a great time. Alongside a bouncy castle, various hands-on activities such as Jenga, table football and painting sessions provided entertainment. The “Junior Wastewater Treatment Master” activity was particularly popular, with around 120 certificates awarded to young participants.

Refreshments were also well catered for. Waffles, grilled sausages and cold drinks encouraged visitors to linger. The tents, bar tables and beach chairs set up by the Ruhrverband offered plenty of opportunities for conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to information and entertainment, the event also focused on social engagement. Thanks to the generosity of the guests, a total of €2,070 was raised. The proceeds will go to the Olpe Animal Shelter.

The positive response and high visitor numbers underscore the great public interest in the topics of water management, sustainability and water protection. Events such as the open day make an important contribution to environmental education and promote understanding of the Ruhrverband’s work.

The Ruhrverband would like to thank all visitors, as well as the staff whose commitment contributed to the success of the event.
