Ruhrverband opens the doors of the Langenbrahm sewage sludge treatment plant
On 21 September 2025, the motto in Essen-Rellinghausen is: Open the doors to the technology of tomorrow! The Langenbrahm sewage sludge treatment plant (KSB) is hosting an open day between 10 am and 4 pm at St. Annental 49, 45134 Essen, and promises an exciting, informative and entertaining day for the whole family.
If you've always wanted to know what actually happens to sewage sludge and how electricity is even generated from it, this is the place for you. During guided tours of the site, visitors learn how modern environmental technology works, clearly explained and demonstrated on site. The Ruhrverband's Infomobile awakens an even greater spirit of discovery, with exciting water-related games that will delight younger visitors in particular. And because technology makes you hungry, the barbecue stand will tempt you with freshly grilled sausages and cool drinks. You can also do some good at the same time: A donation box collects contributions in favour of the Möwennest outpatient children's hospice in Oberhausen, which is supported by the Oberhausen Christian Hospice Association.
The KSB Langenbrahm itself has a lot to offer. It was built between 2004 and 2006 on the site of the former Langenbrahm colliery in St. Annental and is now one of the most modern plants of its kind in the Ruhr region. The sewage sludge from the Essen-Kettwig, Essen-Werden and Essen-Kupferdreh sewage treatment plants is brought together here and treated in large digesters. This produces biogas, which is converted into green electricity. A good example of how wastewater can be turned into real added value for the region. In total
