Infopoint at the fish lift system at the Baldeneysee weir reopened on 12 April 2025
The Infopoint with the fish lift exhibition at the weir of Lake Baldeney in Essen will open its doors again this year on 12 April 2025. Here, visitors can learn more about the fascinating migration routes of fish and the technical challenges involved in building fish lifts. A must for anyone who wants to know how to make the Ruhr more passable for fish again! Until 30 September 2025, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of fish migration at weekends and on public holidays. The Ruhrverband explains clearly why our native finned fish migrate and how modern technology helps them to overcome obstacles such as the Baldeney weir.
Background: Fish can be true long-distance swimmers - but weirs and dams make life difficult for them. That's why Essen has had an innovative solution since 2020: the fish lift on Lake Baldeney! The lift takes you to the top instead of using muscle power. An interactive experience at the Infopoint makes this ingenious system tangible. A 3D terrain model, explanatory films, display boards and a detailed 1:10 model of the lift system illustrate how the "lift" helps the fish. And if you want to know exactly, you can see which fish are travelling there on a monitor.
Info: The Infopoint is open from 12 April to 30 September 2025 - every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 11 am to 6 pm. Admission is free of charge. Groups of 12 people or more can arrange individual guided tours by calling 0201 / 178-1161.

From 12 April 2025, the Ruhrverband will once again be providing information about the fish lift system and the passability of the Ruhr at the Infopoint at the Baldeneysee weir.
