Hagen: Major refurbishment of the Stiftsmühle weir complex

The Ruhrverband is commencing, with immediate effect, the major refurbishment of the Stiftsmühle weir on Herdecker Straße in Hagen. The work forms part of a multi-year refurbishment programme, under which the steel hydraulic structures of the facility’s six weir gates will be completely renewed by 2031. One weir gate will be refurbished each year.

Weir gate 1 will be the first to be refurbished this year. To allow the work to take place, it will first be secured with a temporary closure and then lifted out using a 300-tonne mobile crane. After being loaded onto a specialised transport vehicle, the sluice gate will be taken to a specialist company. There, the steel hydraulic structures will be thoroughly refurbished. In addition, new anti-corrosion protection will be applied.

At the same time, preparatory work is being carried out at the weir complex: the weir gate’s pivot bearing is being reconditioned on site and the anti-corrosion coating on the side plates is being renewed. Once the work at the workshop is complete, the weir gate will be transported back and reinstalled.

During the removal and reinstallation of the weir gate, traffic disruption caused by construction site traffic is to be expected on Herdecker Straße in the area of the access road to the weir. Outside of the crane operations, the road can be used without restriction.

Weir systems play a vital role in regulating water levels and controlling discharge. Regular maintenance of these hydraulic structures helps to ensure their operational safety and functionality in the long term.

Work on weir gate 1 is expected to be completed by the end of October 2026. In the following years, weir gates 2 to 6 will be repaired using the same method. The Ruhrverband asks for your understanding regarding the unavoidable disruption.
