Traffic calming measures in the Ihmerter Valley: Partial closure of Altenaer Straße on 27 May
On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, the Ruhrverband will be carrying out a routine throttle calibration on the storage canal in the Ihmerter Valley in Hemer. To allow for the work, a half-lane closure will be in place on Altenaer Straße near number 80. Traffic will be managed using a mobile traffic light system.
The closure will be put in place on 27 May at 8.30 am. The closure is expected to be lifted on 28 May 2026. Depending on how the work progresses, the closure may be lifted as early as the same day.
Hemer operates a combined sewer system, in which rainwater and wastewater are discharged together via the sewer network. During heavy rainfall, the storage sewer serves to temporarily accommodate large volumes of water and hydraulically relieve the downstream sewer network.
As part of the calibration process, the structure is first filled in a controlled manner to simulate a rainfall event. The stored water is then discharged via a throttle valve. The flow is recorded using a magnetic-inductive flow meter. The measured values are transmitted to the control system, which activates an upstream control valve. This ensures that the outflow remains limited to the specified setpoint of 180 litres per second.
Through this calibration, the Ruhrverband checks whether the measurement, control and regulation systems are functioning correctly and that the set operating parameters are being adhered to. Such tests are a vital part of ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the wastewater treatment facilities.
The Ruhrverband asks local residents and road users for their understanding regarding any potential restrictions during the work.
