A look behind the scenes: Ruhrverband invites you to an open day at the Biggetal dam

It will be exciting, colourful and certainly not boring: on Sunday, 31 August 2025, the Ruhrverband invites you to an open day at the Biggetal dam from 11 am to 5 pm. Anyone who has always wanted to find out what is hidden behind the otherwise closed doors of the Bigge Dam should mark this event in their diary in red, because on this day it's "Doors open!" for the curious, nature lovers, families and technology enthusiasts.

The dam, otherwise a rather quiet giant in the Sauerland region, will become a lively promenade on this day. Visitors can gain exclusive insights into areas that are not normally open to the public. A highlight for technology fans and water lovers alike.
The Ruhrverband provides exciting insights into its work at information stands - from water maintenance to forestry, which plays an important role around the dam.

Those who want to get active themselves can grab a hammer at the hands-on activity: Together with colleagues from the Ruhrverband's forestry operations, nesting boxes and insect hotels will be built. And with tangible benefits for nature and good causes, as the proceeds will be donated to the Balthasar children's and youth hospice in Olpe. The Ruhrverband's Infomobil also provides entertainment and variety with a quiz and small games.

There's no time for boredom away from the technology either: Whether it's the bouncy castle, face painting, magical walking acts with balloon art, soap bubbles and magic or the friendly company stands from the region, there's plenty to discover for guests of all ages. Bigge SUP presents sporting perspectives on the water, while the DLRG, the Hanseatic town of Attendorn and the Biggesee-Listersee tourism association will also be on site with exciting information.

The day will be accompanied musically by the mobile band Jazzkrönung, which will roam the dam with swinging rhythms and create a cheerful atmosphere. And, of course, there will also be plenty to eat and drink: whether it's a hearty barbecue stand, sweet poffertjes, an ice cream van at the playground or the "Leuchtturm" with regional specialities - there's something for everyone.

Important travel advice: As a large number of visitors are expected, the Ruhrverband expressly requests that you avoid travelling by car if possible. Travelling on foot or by bike is particularly recommended - climate-friendly, stress-free and direct to the dam. For those who still have to come by car, there are designated parking spaces in Waldenburger Bucht (please enter Waldenburger Bucht, Attendorn in your satnav). From there, the "Biggolino" will take guests comfortably to the venue, or you can enjoy the short walk of around ten minutes through the beautiful surroundings.

The open day at the Biggetal dam promises a colourful mix of information, entertainment and encounters. And all this in the middle of one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Sauerland. Anyone who has never seen the Biggetal Dam should not miss this day.
