Work on the Grevenstein–Berge drainage channel is progressing

On Friday, 14 August 2026, another important construction phase for the new Grevenstein–Berge drainage channel was successfully completed in Berge. In just three hours, the sewer pipe was laid over a length of around 324 metres using the jacking method, from the junction of Visbecker Straße and Olper Straße to the junction of Visbecker Straße and Grevensteiner Straße. Thanks to the rapid progress of the works, the closure of Grevensteiner Straße required for the works could be lifted after just four hours.

Over the next two weeks, the excavation pits will be filled in and the carriageway of Visbecker Straße restored. Subsequently, the traffic lights at the Visbecker Straße/Olper Straße junction – which had caused traffic restrictions in Berge – can also be removed. This marks the successful completion of a key phase of construction for the new connecting sewer. 

The next step will be to continue the sewer construction within the village of Berge along Grevensteiner Straße. As part of this, the planned footpath will also be constructed. Temporary traffic lights will be required at the junction of Visbecker Straße and Grevensteiner Straße whilst the construction work is underway. Work is

also progressing outside the village: more than 300 metres of pipework have already been laid in the hard shoulder of Grevensteiner Straße.

The discharge channel, which is approximately 3.5 kilometres long in total, is required as part of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. It will enable the Veltins brewery to discharge treated wastewater directly into the Wenne in future. At the same time, the measure will significantly improve the ecological quality of the Arpe.
